Any suggestions of where I can go for suits/sporcoats in London for under £200 around Christmas/New years? I would like classic looking stuff, not super-slim fitting. I know that won't get me canvassed anything, and I'm not at all bothered by that.

I've already identified a few places like Suit Supply, Reiss, Jaeger and the Bicester outlets during sales time at Christmas. I saw a suit for £200 in British GQ from Gibson of London, but I've never heard of this company. Any intel on it?

Hackett (if during a sale – also check their website), Austin Reed, Massimo Dutti, Marks & Spencer (yes, really – they have some great jackets in at the moment c. £130.00).

Marks and Spencer are pretty good for the money.

Lewin may well be that low come the holidays. I have a couple of Gibson jackets in my eBay watchlist, but I'm not yet ready to pull the trigger, especially when I just landed a brilliantly 70s double breasted from YSL with commercial airline wingspan-lapels Ask ManofKent about Brook Taverner

I do come across Gibson items in charity shops, and I wouldn't buy them then even. I think Aquascutum or Austin Reed will be your best bet.

I tend to buy their stuff on-line (particularly on clearance [IMG] ). Their nicer stuff is generally in the £175-£300 bracket for sportscoats, but can be discounted substantially. Some independent men's outfitters stock their stuff.

It's sewn in China and is a mixture of fused and half-canvas, but construction isn't bad for the price and it's the fabrics on the better sportscoats that sets them on a higher level than most of the competition. Most of the better jackets use one of the bigger Scottish or Yorkshire mills - Johnstone of Elgin, Robert Noble etc.

Value for money they score highly (much better than my Austin Reed jackets, pretty much up there with those I've got from Hackett). I find if I size down a size I get a pretty good fit.

reiss seem to have some nice stuff this season and ive seen pics of suitsupply looking pretty good.
relatively little-known is aquascutum's collaboration with nick hart of spencer hart. they have them on the top floor of the regent st flagship store. at sale time they will be not much over your budget. maybe call them in advance though, their sale seems to start really early.

^^ My Aquascutum Ltd. (Nick Hart) sportcoat is excellent. I bought mine second hand, but I remember the recent sale prices starting around £175. The cut is perhaps a little too "fashionable" for you, Fidel, given that it's all about modism

Speaking of collabs, Richard James is in bed with Austin Reed. That may be worth a gander
