Suits for man sized thighs

I'm 5'11", 185#, a 40R in a jacket, am reasonably lean, but I have 24" thighs, due to my propensity for weightlifting (and have man-sized glutes as well). In many suit brands, a nice fit for the jacket leaves me, uh, pinched a bit in the seat.

I like my hobby and am not going to give it up. I could go from 13% to 10% body fat, but the basic shape isn't going to change.

Any suggestions of RTW suit brands that have pant styles that fit my body?

MTM is your friend. I am roughly your size and seldom get a perfect fit without massive alterations.

I've purchased some Canali suits which fit in the lower half, but the pants were really baggy, and the jacket waists were on the large side (which can be altered but still); i presume they were made for fatass Americans!

Unless you have a very small waist are you really having problem with 24 inch thighs?

Avoid slim cut pants. Stick to full cuts. They'll look slimmer on you then somebody with smaller legs.

Try Armani. I believe they are normally cut for a muscular build, esp. through the thighs.

I was in your boat, maybe even a little more so. I'm 6'3", and when I was a full time athlete up until about two years ago was 220+ with 28.5" thighs, but still had a small waist and small calves and ankles, so it was pretty much concentrated in my thighs/butt. Here's a picture of what I looked like:

My recommendation for RTW that won't break the bank, although not SF-approved (although I believe fit trumps brand/label) is Banana Republic's straigh leg pants (non-jeans). They're pretty close to perfect in the seat and thigh, however they have no taper to them so they're way too wide below the knee. But if you take them to a tailor and have them taper it below the knee it will look great with accentuating you're disproportionate thighs. I'd only recommend this if you go to their outlet and get a pair on sale for about $30, so after tailoring it's about $50-55. If you pay full price plus alterations you may as well get MTM.

Guys, the problem for OP isn't finding pants to my understanding. It is finding suits that will fit well on both the pants and the jacket. This is a much trickier problem, as even suit separates might not well solve this issue.

I have this problem as well and skilled tailors can insert a "v" of fabric in the thigh and make more room with excess fabric. It's not ideal, but does provide an alternative to MTM or separates for suits. While you can tell if you look closely at the inner thigh of my pants, I seriously doubt anyone would ever notice. Or if someone does, hopefully it's an attractive woman or....

its back to basics again. do not pick your waist size.
try larger sizes of all kinds till you find the trouser that fits your seat and thighs.
then have the waist taken in to fit your waist.
its not rocket science
also remember that pleated trousers are a little fuller than plain fronts.

Probably won't find any suits OTR, you should try separates if you don't want to go the MTM route

But this is going to mean a Stop Making Sense jacket, no?

So summing up this thread, my reasonable options are:

1) Separates and take in the waist
2) The sexy thigh triangle insert

3) MTM
4) Possibly Armani (would love to hear other suit lines that work)

I love the fact that in 1 hour, I got 7 responses, mostly dead on!

I had run this problem while i was shopping for a suit back in college. If a suit fit me dead on, i would make sure that the thigh had atleast an inch of room to let out. If it did, I bought it. I will admit that my beer consumption is much lower now and I no longer have this problem

I feel for you.

As an ex ice hockey goalie and lots of various other sports such as alpine sking and a regular gym 4-6 times a week, sports is also a lifestyle that constantly affects my clothes. I'm 5'8" and seem to have (measures for the first time) 28" circumference around my thighs. I'm also fairly lean at 158.

Anyway, I prefer a slim cut to pretty much everything I wear, including suits, slacks or denim. I do not, however, find any clothes that would really fit me well. Most also squeeze the life out of me, especially at my thigh area. The solution for me has simply been to buy a size up and send them to a tailor to taper them below the knee. I just bought a new nice pair of chinos, and 48 being my 'real' size, I had to take size 52.

So, buy a pair with enough room for your thighs and take them to a tailor. Simple.

What sport were you in? Is that National Team uni that you're wearing?

I am a rower so I have the same deal, albeit with about a 25" thigh now that I've been out of competition for a bit. Was a 27". There's a thread in SW&D about this topic. I've found that if you go with a slim cut suit, you have to size up for the shoulders to fit. The pants then are too large and you can have the trousers slimmed down when they do the waist and hem as well. Just did that and I'm very happy with the results.

I'm assuming you were referring to me and not the OP regarding the sport. US Bobsled team, I was a pilot for about 8 years until 2009.

At 5'8", 158 is not fairly lean by any stretch. You are either quite muscular, or quite fat.
