I've read a previous post where a guy gave a shoulder measurement of an old suit jacket as 20". A reply post said he could fit into a jacket with a 19" or 20" shoulder measurement.

So, my question is, in what range should the shoulder measurement of the coat be in relation to one's actual (read, a measuring tape directly across the bare skin) measurement? Additionally, when you take your actual shoulder measurement, what point on the shoulder to you measure from? The outside of the shoulder muscle? Or the edge of the bone/joint?

I had always thought that the shoulder measurement was one that would be more static than chest measurement (i.e. a guy with a 38" chest could fit in a coat with 40, 41, or 42 inch chest and all would fit well, albeit differently).

i think the shoulder width is a matter of preference. i've never tried on a jacket that fit my chest but not my shoulders although i do prefer a narrower cut.
