Dear Forum members:

Is it a fashion faux pas to wear a suit jacket (coat) with a pair of jeans?
I'm thinking about pairing one of my tailored charcoal gray suit with a pair of dark blue jeans.

Thanks,
Steve

Umm, no. I've done it a few times and I think its a classic. However, there's nothing special with it unless its a nice jacket with a nice pair of jeans with a nice shirt and nice shoes. I feel that if you skimp in any of the ingredients you'll just look ordinary (but I suppose that goes for any outfit).

I've had good luck with either solid color suit coats or patterned sport coats. Some suit coats look fusty when paired with jeans IMHO, but then again if you're considering this you've probably avoided those suits.

Generally speaking, it is not a fashion faux pas. However, the important question to ask is: is the jacket going to look like it is missing pants? Usually you want to avoid patterned suit jackets (pinstripes, chalkstripes, glenn plaid, etc.) with such a combination. Solid colors are your friend. Don't skimp on the shoes either.

Are you talking about an orphaned suit jacket or an odd jacket (aka sports coat)?

I think the latter works better.

I do it regularly, and lots of guys do it here in Europe, but I do think gray is more a suit color... I can do it with blue, black, khaki, cream, brown jackets... but gray ? I just can't

I frequently wear jeans with odd jackets--black/white herringbone, brown corduroy, and tan glen plaid w/blue overpane. It's all about texture for me: I've never worn a hard-finished jacket with jeans. I also don't wear suitcoats as odd jackets, but YMMV.

I would disagree on glen plaid. I think it can be quite stylish with a pair of jeans.

I think it only works if you're dressing it down enough. A tucked-in dress shirt with jeans just looks wrong to me. The only time I'll tuck in a dress shirt into jeans is if I'm wearing a sweater over it.
In the current GQ, Glen O'Brien says there is never an excuse to wear an untucked dress shirt. I'll disagree with him.

I wear a suit jacket with jeans and an untucked shirt all the time, and I think it looks good. I like a t-shirt under a suit jacket and jeans as well.

I've seen the jacket-and-jeans combo work with a shirt and tie before, but very rarely - most of the time it looks wrong. Must be an advanced maneuver.

Well, it probably doesn't

Try this. Dry or one wash straight jeans, White collared shirt under a fitted burgandy v-Neck. Shoes either black loafers or some nice cognac splittoe norwegian ankle boots. Top with Fitted mid grey odd jacket in contemporary cut

In my opinion it will not look very good. Suits don`t look good with jeans, and are even difficult to pair with odd trousers (sometimes light colored suits can work). If you want a nice looking jeans look...you really need some sports jackets.
