Suit Jacket Size

I have not purchased a suit in a while and have lost some weight since my last purchase. I have always been measured as a 38 short jacket when in the shops. I am thinking about a MTM suit online and had my wife measure me. I looked up how to measure properly and the first time mesurement was 36 and the second time was 37. I assume to use the larger measurement.

If I decide to purchase a suit in the shops, am I better off trying on a 36 or a 38 jacket?

Try both. Go with the one that fits better.

+1, MTM online is 50/50 whether it ends in tears of frustration or not.

I appreciate the feedback. Online MTM seems hard to get right.

I believe my true measurement is closer to 37, that I why I am asking. Generally, is it better to size up and tailor, or is it easier to work with a smaller jacket? Often it seems jackets are cut quite large, even a short.

+2. Try on as many brands and sizes as possible.
