Suit from a Tailor, expectations?

I'm a senior in college, majoring in Finance and Accounting, so its time to get the right suit. I'm 6'4 and have a very athletic build, so it has been hard finding the right suit. I have tried numerous box stores (macy's, lord and taylor, jos a bank, century 21, ect) and haven't found anything that either fits good or looks good.

I recently went to a reputable tailor and asked to be fitted for a suit. He had me try on a couple jackets to get a basic size (46L) and then pulled out a couple suits that were already pinned back for other customers to get a better idea. He then pulled out a book of fabric, for color, and I went with a charcoal solid. He asked for a price point, which I said $500, and then said modifications would run another 150-200, so I negotiated down to $600 total, which I put half down. He said that he was going to order an Italian wool super 150 suit and call me back for the fitting.

As someone with relatively little experience with suits, does this seem normal and a fair price. What expectations should I have and what advice would you offer going forward. Thanks

Where are you from? Is it half-canvassed/full-canvassed? For $600 that's quite intriguing for a MTM suit...not quite as good as Thick As Thieves, or most suit supply suits, but due to your size they probably wouldn't work. Word of advice, people here probably won't take too much interest in the thread until you have something to show - in which case you should post it on the fit and alteration suggestion thread.

If this is going to be your One True Suit, you might want something a little tougher and more crease-resistant than 'Super 150s', but in the market you're in people pay a lot of attention to that number and you might have some trouble convincing your tailor that you don't just want the biggest Magic Number he can manage at your price point...

if it's actually MTM, the price you've been quoted is certainly entirely reasonable, agreed with dohare.

I am from northern NJ. Not sure about half or fully canvassed. I mentioned about rather having something like a 130 for better durability, but the tailor said I was better off with a 150.

I have been looking at something to get me through interviews and for a little bit. I've been looking at the online custom suits, like black lapel. I just can't wait to have it remade 1-2 times with the delayed turnaround starting off.
