Hi guys, This is my first post, greetings from London! I know this is the best place for fashion advice because I've been leaching and reading so many of the threads here down the years, never really signed up for reasons unknown to me. Anyways now I want some advice so I'm signing up (typical I know)!

My company are throwing their annual christmas bash next Wednesday(in a week) and I'm struggling a little (as every year) to decide on what to wear. I don't wear black tie so the option is a suit, most probably black. I've got a wide array of colors of shirts and ties at my disposal but for some reason I'm leaning towards doing the whole dark on dark thing with a very light and shiny tie ... CHEESE ON A STICK I know, I just can't get that image out of my head ... HELP!

How formal an event is it?

From you you imply the alternative is black tie. I also suspect that you are not that senior - or else you would not be asking such a question and would certainly not be trying to make yourself the centre of attention as your suggested apparel does. If so a dark suit with a lighter short and bright tie would be fine. No shiny ties or all black on this occasion.

Don't go with a black suit.

Well your right so I'll give that one to you! I joined in the summer, and I'm not that highly ranked (putting it nicely).

What do you mean by short tie though, something like this?

Methinks it rather unlikely that you've been reading here "down the years" and yet don't already know how SFers generally feel about black suits and/or the "dark on dark thing with a very light and shiny tie."

Are you, perhaps, an agent provocateur?

Your options are 1)red suit, 2)green suit. Not a single step backwards.

I wore a dark blue with cream windowpane suit to my Christmas party last weekend.

To my company party this Saturday, I'm wearing a grey suit with a very light blue and silver windowpane.

Nice! Any more details on the grey suit?

It's a bespoke suit I had made by Johnathan Behr in LA. It's grey and window paned, has the interesting ticket pocket and all. Going with a white herringbone shirt, french cuffs, dark grey and silver striped tie, light blue pocket square, etc. Pretty conservative and hopefully it works.

I think getting a red suit and a green shirt just to wear to the Xmas party would be excessive. What if someone there is Jewish?
