Suit fit question

I recently tried on some slim cut off the rack suits and have a question on jacket fit. Across the shoulders was good, and so-so around the waist, though bordering on pulling at the top button. However when buttoned (top button only on a 2 button single breast) across the chest in line with the middle of the lapels, the jacket sat out from the chest with a distinct point in the fabric.

What in the cut is causing this, and can it be tailored to sit flat across the chest?

Sounds like it's too small through the chest to me.
