    Hi everyone,

I have a work event that I'm going to next week that I needed to pick up some suits for. I ended up deciding on the two that are posted here as quick off-the-rack options.

How do you feel about the general fit? Is the button stance way too high or does it look okay? If it matters, I plan to wear just the jackets as blazers with dark jeans (as that's what the general attire is).

Any thoughts or advice are greatly appreciated! If there changes that should be made, is it something that could be done via alterations or no?

    Thanks!

I personally like the navy suit better, but the shoulders look too small in both the suits. Also, hemming would need to be done to the pants as they look a bit too long.

Yup, the pants are definitely being hemmed! What about the shoulders look too small? Generally, when I try any larger size, they're way too far past my actual shoulders.

I like the bottom one(is that the navy?)
What color is th top one? Black?
Don't wear the jacket with jeans. Wear the suit with a white shirt and no tie.
If you want to wear jeans, return the top suit and get a sportscoat.

    Thanks for the help.
Yup, the bottom one is navy. The top one is a dark gray with a small pinstripe.

I'll definitely take your advice with the full suit. Thanks for your input.

You've been a member for almost a year. Why do you need to run out and buy two otr suits for a work event? Why don't you already have those basic colors?

As far as the fit goes, they both fit like otr suits. The shoulders are too wide. The body doesn't have good shape. The pants are too long. Neither of them is better than the other IMO. Pick the one that you feel the best about.

Mostly money, to be honest. I don't often attend events that require suits, so I'm trying to make the right decisions and generally buy made-to-measure build up my wardrobe. I literally just got invited to this event, so I didn't have much time to plan for it and just needed to get something that would fit the bill.

The pants being too long is being addressed. Can the body shape be addressed by alterations? Is the button stance too high to the point where it looks stupid? I generally find that a lower button stance looks better on me, but given the circumstances, I'm simply trying to find something that works.

    Thanks for your input.

Wait, you said you are wearing these with jeans, so why did you buy suits? I would consider buying a navy blazer and then a patterned blazer.

That was the original plan, but that's changed now. It's very difficult for me to find suits that fit me in the shoulders, so I ended up getting these with the intention of just wearing the jackets for the event.

Then what you showed above is passable but not good. Just gotta keep looking for a brand that works right in the shoulders. If you like those two models, try a size down and see how it fits.

Unfortunately, that's the smallest they've got. That's why I've planned on building up my collection with MTM suits. The suits in the photos are both 36R. Generally, even that size is way too large for me in the shoulders...these two looked surprisingly decent in that regard when compared to most.

It's good to know that these are passable. I simply need them to help me get by. Perhaps I'll take in the body of the jackets a bit so I can wear them down the road, but I'm planning on getting some MTM cuts in the near future.

What brands are these, and what stores do you have available where you live?

I suspect you'll have to expand your search online, or even dip your toe in the might-work-might-not world of online MTM.

These particular suits were from the Bachrach chain. I'm in the Southeastern Michigan area, so I don't have too many high-fashion options available (at least not that I'm aware of).

I'm not opposed to doing online MTM if you have any recommendations.

Is it possible to do that via alterations?

The navy one is actually quite OK without much alteration.

But please don't wear that jacket alone with jeans. Wear the whole suit but wear a OCBD instead to dress it down.

Thanks for the reply. That's definitely the plan!
Would you pass on a white linen pocket square as well?

Out of curiosity, is the other suit incredibly bad?

Yes, forego the PC since you want to dress it down to fit in with the crowd.

As for the other suit...No, it was not that bad. In other words, you don't have to burn it.

I suggest taking pictures of front, side, and back with dress shoes on for better assessment by the SF community.
