I've been fortunate with tailoring costs on my e-bay purchases. I use a small tailor shop run by a Vietnamese woman who does good work.

My Oxxford alterations have run about $75 (let out the jacket, shorten sleeves, let out the pants, shorten the inseam). For that, I've gotten a very nice fit--far better than any department store has ever given me.

I've also been lucky in other ways--I purchased a 3-piece mtm suit and the vest and jacket fit perfectly--the only alteration was to shorten the inseam of the pants.

Go to the Connecticut Avenue Filene's Basement (one block north of the L Street Exit of the Farragut North metro station) as soon as possible.  On the second floor is a rack of suits selling at 50% off.  I don't recall if there are any 42Rs, but it would be worth checking out.  FB is also offering a 25% discount on the rest of their suits that sell for above $249.99.
