I have been reading through the forum for a little while, but I am a first-time poster. My basic question is this, what is the best suit option for $500 or less? I would love to spend more, but it's just not in the cards right now. Anyway, the way I see it, I have the following options:

1) Buy off the rack at a place like Filene's Basement. I found a Zegna that fits quite well for $500. I also tried on, and REALLY liked the fit of, a Ben Sherman suit.
2) Buy a MTM suit from a place like ModernTailor.com for $350.
3) Purchase a new suit on eBay from someone like Wizard of Aahs; Valentinos are $350 or less.
4) Buy a high-end used suit on eBay.

Here is a little bit about myself. I am in my early 30s and have a 42 inch chest and a 31 inch waist. So, I would really prefer a nice athletic cut with flat front pants. Most American suits don't cut it. I have 7 other suits that I bought for between $200 and $300 (Austin Reed, Jones NY, Ben Sherman, Brooks Brothers 346 line, and a couple suits made in China). I know that's not a great collection compared to what others on this site may have, but I work for the government so it is not hard to look like a good dresser!

Best bet might be option 1 and then bringing it to a tailor for alterations.

It never hurts to buy a suit in person

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
