From your experiences, how long did it take you to realize that your pants have noticeably more wear than your jacket? Assuming normal usage of hanging the jacket during work.

Well, for me not a matter of realization, but a matter of logic. You use your pants more than your jacket. Each time you get up from your chair you are scuffing the fabric. The threads will eventually wear, and as you've experienced, occur much faster than your jacket. The pants are not hung whilst you are working; they are on you from the moment you put them on to the moment you take them off, which is considerably longer than when your jacket is on.

If you leave your jacket on all the time, it should not normally be a problem. The only suits where my trousers have shown wear before the jackets were made from Loro Piana worsted, which I later learned was not a 2x2 weave and so had more tendency to pill. Needless to say, I am not a repeat customer.

If you do remove your jacket for much of the day, an extra pair of trousers is a good idea.

It sounds like getting 2 pairs makes a lot of sense to you, so don't forget that second pair.
