Any suggestions ? How is Buffalo / Niagra Falls BTW ?

The falls are cool, but the town is just a tourist trap. Or at least that was my impression after spending an afternoon there.

What are hoping to see/experience on the trip?

If it's history, the definitely the east coast is better, but if it's natural wonders, it pales in comparison to what's west of the Rockies. A classic trip is to start in San Fran and drive down the coast to San Diego... awesome sights, natural and historical (spanish missions), LA (disneyland, etc), and then the Zoo in san diego... all good for kids. You also wouldn't feel like a minority and get a lot of the stares you would elsewhere in the West outside of California.
