[edit] Another question posted at the bottom. Pls see. I didn't want to start another thread. [edit2] How about this one? https://www.nau.com/homepage/index.j...ucts/307M205&4 Hi, Searched... got overwhelmed. Anyway, looking for a rain coat, preferably 3/4 or 2/3 length. Something that IS really waterproof, preferably has a hood. Something slim-fitting. Just keep in mind that waterproofness is a must. It start raining here in early September and doesn't really stop until December or January.

How stupid will Barbours look with a hoodie? I'm looking at this -

It seems perfect for the weather here.

Arcteryx is technical-looking, yes, but when paired with the right outfit, they can be quite urbane. Best money can buy, though.

That Barbour parka looks like something my grandmother would wear... and I'm English.

I second that Bridgen. Waxed cotton = uBer fugly.

Arc'teryx Gore-Tex XCR jackets are completely waterproof - all seams are sealed, all zippers are sealed. They're lightweight and do look very stylish. It'll keep whatever you have inside (ie. your $10,000 suit) dry. The OP requested slim fitting, waterproof, has a hood, at least 2/3 long... and Arc-teryx fits the bill.

I personally have a black, but I'd get a gold in a heartbeat. I think this looks great: http://arcteryx.com/product.aspx?Alpha-LT-Jacket#

The model I posted earlier is identical in cut and virtually identical in appearance, and can be had for about $250.

What's the difference then? Almost $200 of it?

First and foremost, the greatest difference between the two is the technical materials used. The Alpha LT, the more expensive model is comprised of a triple layer Gore-Tex fabric, versus the Alpha SL, which is comprised of two-layer Gore-Tex.

The second factor(s) increasing cost are the "bells and whistles" that draw distinction of the utility of both articles.

The Alpha LT is more "hardcore" and geared toward true alpinists. The Alpha SL, while still fully capable, is essentially more a technical rain jacket.

I think I'm sold on the one you suggested. Now the hardest part... picking a colour!

A note on the colors. The Arcteryx pics you see on their site are much darker and richer in person. Their lighting makes them look like they'd light up an Antarctic winter.

You can eBay, craigslist or even go to the Arcteryx sales they have at their outlet store in Vancouver for much cheaper prices.
