i'm looking to add a new suit to my collection and am looking for suggestions. i'll be starting at a big law firm in the fall and thought now might be a good time to catch a good deal on a classic suit. i have a kinda junky navy suit and a decent charcoal suit that go me through interviews, but i am thinking i ought to have something nice on hand. budget is maybe $1000, and i'm in nyc if that helps. also, i'm about 5'10, fairly lean and athletic looking, and want to avoid looking like i'm wearing a large box made out of wool. any particular brands or shops i should check out? any other advice for building the wardrobe welcome as well.

Check out the Buying and Selling forums. You can often find great deals on suits that you can't find elsewhere in stores. Otherwise, try Century 21, Filene's Basment, Saks off Fifth, Last Call, The Rack, or wait for good sales and hit up Saks, Bergdorf, Barney's, etc.

Some labels to consider: Ralph Lauren Black Label (retail ~$2k), Sartorio Kiton (retail ~$2k - hard to find in the states), Kiton, Brioni (some models), Cesare Attolini Napoli (the last three are much more pricey, but sometimes can be found close to $1k --there are a couple on the B&S forum now)

A reasonable place to start would be Brooks Bros. They seem to be having sales (2 for $998) on their trimmer line suits (Fitzgerald, Reagent) that normally go for list $1000 list each. The Fitzgerald is their leanest suit, and I have two - quite nice with a little extra waist suppression. They are reasonably well made and should last many , many years.
Get a subtle pin stripe- one in blue and one in gray - hard to go wrong.

After you get to know what you like and are more knowledgeable, then might be the time to start looking at really high end stuff.

there are still some very nice suits at the Barneys warehouse sale--many in the $400 range, and a lot of staples---navys and grays.
