i'm thinking pin dot? what pattern would a classic burgundy come in anyway? i kinda like them small to almost seem solid. would you suggest i go for a solid instead? not sure if i've seen any recently.

From a purely logical standpoint, the most useful tie you will own is a navy-blue club stripe. Followed by a brown or burgundy in the same pattern.
what about a burgundy club stripe? seems better in navy though.

Burgundy club stripe is nice. I used to have a burgundy tie with a microprint. From afar it looked like pindots, but it was very small little squares within squares.

Keep your eyes open at Drake's.

I think a plain Grenadine like posted above is choice one. Then there's the rep stripe, and lastly the polka/pattern... Examples:

My favorite is a Brooks Brothers tie with yellow polka dots.
