Suede Shoes and Belt: Matchy-matchy?

To me, the "matchy matchy" rule is that if you are wearing a tie, pocket square, and suspenders that were clearly bought as a set, you look like a douche.

A suede belt and suede shoes in the same color is just fine.

Same family.

Count me in the 'avoid an exact match' crowd, apart from with black shoes. Things should go, not necessarily match. Belts and shoes should be treated as independent parts of a harmonious whole.

My rule is that if the shoes are in the family of browns, wear a belt in the family of browns. And I usually include burgundy in that. For more casual outfits, I'll throw a ribbon belt or a web belt in the mix.

One thing I am careful of is matching metals. If there is metal on the shoe (monks, some loafers), make sure you have the right color buckle. That detail, much more then exact color or texture, can turn the overall whole into a discordant mess.

Matte alligator belts make all such conundrums irrelevant.

But then you have to wear an alligator belt.

With a suit I may match but with a sport jacket I'm more likely not to.

For any shoe I wear, I choose from one of a few belts that I have had for years. Color of belt and shoes tends to be similar but not always an exact match. I have suede shoes but not suede belts, and can't see myself ever buying one.

My dark brown suede belt is almost my OneBeltâ„¢, as some of you might have noticed.

I've got a couple of suede belts and I do the same. More specifically, I think that casual suede shoes (moccasins, chuckas, desert boots) are fine with casual calf belts, but suede dress shoes require a not-too-casual suede belt.
