I would imagine a lot of these incidents occur when grade school to high school students are going to school. Bizarre experiences I've noticed occur once or twice a year.

On the way to work this morning a guy was on the phone with ear piece and in an argument (ostensibly with his gf / sig other) and began shouting "What does 'what' mean?" over and over. He was also very poorly dressed.

You'd be surprised. I find it is mostly adults, and teenagers who are the biggest offenders.

i descended on to the platform yesterday for my morning commute and somebody was there having some type of medical emergency. A few cops were there, etc.

I couldn't tell what was wrong or anything as I had a paper to read.

I honestly think that some people cause these "medical emergencies" on platforms and trains just to get attention. I have been privy to these before and it always looks as if there is no apparent danger to these people at all. I think they are just crazy, and/or overdramatic.

I'm glad I take an express bus in the morning...they are almost always silent and inoffensive(except for someone who is trying to cause early deafness with their earbuds so loud everyone can hear).

I take the train home and while it is usually fine, it's going to be the home commute that has the crazy people, obnoxious panhandlers, or smelly bums.

Harder to do now that I take the northbound train, but its always a fun game to try and guess what stop everybody in the car is going to get off at. Involves a lot of stereotyping and profiling but you can be remarkably successful...asian = chinatown, nerdy asian = garfield (UofC stop), pot-bellied white guy with midwestern fatwife = Sox-35th, etc.)

Can't believe I never shared this story...I took two fucking classes from Bay Ridge to Greenwood Cemetery (80 kids plus 8 chaperons and me)...hate those stupid yellow buses so we took the R train. Get on by our school t the first stop, and I always warn the kids that on the way to the cemetery, people will be getting on the train MISERABLE, because they have to go to jobs they can't stand (a lot like what I hear here...LOL) and they're tired/cranky/hung over/still intoxicated...you know, a regular morning commute.

Anyway, it usually works for one stop, and then, its a shit show the rest of the way.

Anyway, last year, one of the classes had a kid who was bat shit crazy. He was all of 4' tall 65 pounds soaking wet, and wasn't afraid of shit. He walks up to this ghetto looking black guy who got on in Sunset Park and said, "What the fuck are you looking at nigga?". He's a pale skinned Muslim kid btw. So of course, I have to go over and calm this fucker down. But rather than confronting him, I just grabbed my student and put him on the other side of the train. The rest of the way this guy kept muttering to himself and staring at ME. I thought I was gonna be shanked...no shit.

Which leads to the trip this year...

We usually get off at 25th St and walk up, but this trip (the Delta class*aka* smart class) there was afire on the tracks and we were held at 36th Street. So I make the executive decision to walk the 11 blocks rather than wait for the fire to be put out and a new train to arrive. As we are half out of the station, some kid (not one of mine) comes running up screaming, "SOMEBODY GOT STABBED, SOMEBODY GOT STABBED! Police! HELP!" There were about 20 FDNY with axes and picks standing around and then three NYPD guys (who look like the most they've run in their lives was to Dunkin' Donuts to their squad car) come barrelling down the stairs knocking over the kids. I kind of "ole" them at the turnstile and they run down as I get all my kids out. I first thought one of my students mouthed off to someone, but thankfully it wasn't, but when I reported back about my trip my principal made the decision to never allow any of our kids on the subway again...yellow busses or no trip at all...thank you NYC MTA riders!

I'm trying to make a more concerted effort to snap quick and discreet pics of some of the stuff one encounters. Here is effort #1:
