I'm looking to buy a used 601R that is 20 years old but was refurbished 6 years ago and hasn't been used much since it was refurbished. The cost is $500.

I do worry about noise and have been reading about things failing quite often in these things despite their exorbitant price.

Should I go for it?

My parents and gf's parents have had theirs forever. They are amazing. Basically, there's a reason when a company has a reputation as the best refridgerators.

Just like Weber is the king of grills. SubZero is the king of refridgerators.

SubZero is strictly for the hipsters.

There is only one "king"...the Traulsen UR48DT

Yeah, but at 13k.... Damn
On top of that, it has no cache with the hipster crowd.

But you can save 10 grand, and find a "used" one. It's not like they wear out. I saw one listed locally on Craigslist for 3 grand. I was tempted to grab it...even though I'm in a rental.

We have side by side sub zeros and they've been great...our neighbor has had some problems with hers though. They seem to be hit or miss as far as reliability goes.

That's what it seems like. Maybe I'll just bite the bullet for $500.

I would find out what refurbished means in terms of component replacement. I have a 20 year old 550 (bottom freezer) and can tell you that a new Sub Zero compressor can push into 4 digits to replace. We're planning a kitchen redo and will certainly replace it at that point. A swap out last I looked would have run almost $500 just for delivery and installation....

Take this with a grain of salt, because I know nothing about Sub Zeros, but as a general matter, an old fridge is going to suck energy like you wouldn't believe. Bad for your pocket book, bad for the environment.

You know your fridges. The only thing Sub Zero has that comes close is the Pro48, but the cost doesn't justify the performance.

Which is of course is an obvious attempt to mimic the look of the Traulsen.

Why pay dearly for the clone, when you can have the real thing?

Traulsen is great, though not perfect. SubZero being only for hipsters is LOL silly, but why am I surprised?

Yea...insulting me over fridge opinions seems reasonable (sigh).

I don't think there is anything wrong with a Sub Zero itself...it's just the taint it has by holding such a holy place in yuppy lore that turns me off.
