Oh Styleforum . . .

This weekend, my wife and I attended the wedding of a law school friend down in Florida. During the reception, I was talking with a well-dressed guy from California about law, law school, etc. when the conversation turned to clothing. I don't recall what prompted his statement, but he confidently asserted that my shoes were Allen-Edmonds' Strands. I paused for a second, completely cracking up on the inside. I then said, "You MUST be a member of Styleforum." He said, "Yes," and we proceeded to almost die laughing for the next minute.

Good times.

Alas--I forgot. How à propos it would have been. Regardless, hilarity did ensue.

Is there a SF secret handshake that we could have used to ID one another? I can't count on every SF sleeper agent to be wearing AE Strands.

It's been suggested in the past that the SF identify [S.F.I.] should be to make eye contact while performing a slight upward tug of the pocket square. Quite subtle, yet very unlikely to be done randomly by two people at once (particularly in USA because few wear squares).

You almost got it, California - once the upward tug of the PS has been initiated, the other party then acknowledges said presence with a slight downward scrotal tug. This is how it goes.

That's pretty funny. Every time I go to a wedding I can tell no one else is a member of SF, because most guys wear suits from Men's Wearhouse with square-toed shoes.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
