Stuart's choice shoes

I saw three pairs of these in a thrift store yesterday, all perforated cap-toes in black, brown suede, and an antique brown. They had very much of an EG look to them. I vaguely recall some discussion of the various makers Paul Stuart has used over the years, but I wasn't able to find the relevant posts. These were really beautiful shoes, unfortunately a half to a full size too small for me (I take a US size 9.5, so these were in the 8.5-9.0 range).

I think that it was about 2000 (I will let you know tomorrow) that Paul Stuart stopped carrying Edward Green and started carrying Grenson.
Paul Stuart had carried Edward Green under the Edward Green name for years. When it switched, Paul Stuart started carrying Grenson under the name "William Green." I have the catalogue at home for the one season that Paul Stuart used that name.
I have heard that Edward Green either sued Paul Stuart or threatened suit due to its use of the name "William Green," and that is when Paul Stuart came up with the name "Stuart's Choice" for the Grensons.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will have to go back and see if I can still get those shoes. It would be a shame to let them slip into the wrong hands when there are still many who would care for and admire them.

When it switched, Paul Stuart started carrying Grenson under the name "William Green."

Grenson was actually originally named William Green & Son (and they may still be incorporated under that name), so Paul Stuart's label wasn't that much of a stretch. Of course, they were clearly trying to remind their customers of Edward Green, which is probably why Edward Green sued.

My Grenson chukkas from Bennie's have an 04-97 on the interior, which I had taken to be the manufacture date. They also have the handwritten "P", which most (including Bennie's) take to mean Paul Stuart. Was there a time when PS carried both? Of course, the 04-97 could be something other than a date.

Correction. I was off about three years.
I looked at my old Paul Stuart catalogues. They show:
(a) Fall 1996-Paul Stuart sold Edward Green shoes.
(b) Spring 1997-Paul Stuart sold "William Green & Son" shoes.

Fall 1997-present Paul Stuart has been selling "Stuart's
Choice" shoes.
So if these are labelled "Stuart's Choice," they are Grensons made for Paul Stuart, from 1997 to the present.

On a slight tangent - I shop frequently at Paul Stuart, and have really enjoyed this season of shoes they have presented. Any idea when they go on sale? I know they have sales a few times a year, but I cant remember when exactly. I have my eye on a few pair, but at $625.00 I cant justify the purchase when for about $100.00 more I can get my beloved Edward Greens. However, at a discount, Id be more than happy to take a couple of pairs off their hands.

That spring 1997 date would be consistent with my chukkas and their 04-97, if indeed that is a date. They likely would have been among the very first Grenson offerings at PS.
