Any of you other Parents have this problem? We are <60 days out and are having a hard time getting off first base. We are having a girl (our first), and part of the problem is that we had a boys name all picked out but never really focused on girls names. So here we are, completely unable to come up with anything other than a mid-sized list of meh names.

We have a couple of qualifications for a name:

    1. Prefer to start with A or D (long story)
    2. Nothing too trendy or trying too hard (no made up, soap opera, chick lit, too many Y's, etc...)
    3. Nothing too ethnic....I have a very Jewish last name, so choices are somewhat limited.
    4. that said - nothing too Jewish either...(equally long story)

We're ok with foregin names (french, russian, etc....) as long as they are mostly americanized. No Svetlanas or anything like that.

In my mind, the issue is that my wife seems to really want a fru fru feminine name, and I am leaning towards uni-sex or even masculine names.

I feel like long term a more uni-sex or common name will 'wear better' over time. I have too many freinds with kids who have this very adorable names for a 3 year old, but I just dont see them wearing that well when the are in their 50's with 3 kids and a 4 pack a day cigarette habit. equally , I dont see people discussing the CEO of a fortune 500 company named Mykenzy or something terrible like that.

Having said that, my first choice at the moment is 60/40 a boys name, and that has its own set of problems so they tell me....I've always liked girls with BOys names (maybe its some latent homosexuality - dont even get me started on girls with short hair....)

So, amicrazy or was naming your kids this difficult???

PS - did anyone have any clue having a baby was so f'ing expensive?

One of my best friends (a girl) is named Toby SomethingJewish. She received a draft card in the mail (a true story) and is frequently addressed in communications as Mr. Toby SomethingJewish. Just be aware of that when you pick a name.

I assume the restriction to an A or D is due to trying to name them after one of your mothers or grandmothers?

Notwithstanding the foregoing, what about Addison?

Addison is not terrible, but 1) my god daughter is named adeline 2) I instantly think of the character from Grey's anatomy.

I think the fact that girls with boy names get addressed as Mr. is kind of a hoot. we strive for a 'equal treatment' society, but there is no gender neutral form of addressing someone . I'm not advocating some radical feminazi agenda, but as someone who has struggled internally that my last name effectively gives away the fact I am jewish, despite the fact that I havent spoken to my mother in months and am eating a ham and cheese sandwich, I wish we didnt pre-judge people by their names (first or last).

Yeah, I'm sure your kid will think its a hoot, too. Why don't you just name her Destiny Monique JewishLastName so we can all join in on the fun.
