Striped Tie with Striped Shirt?

Is it true that they never ever work? I was feeling kinda adventurous today and paired a white shirt with thin pale blue stripes with a pink and silver diagonal striped tie. Ignoring the protests of the gf I wore it out. At work I asked a couple of co-workers if the combination worked and sadly, they all said 'No, not really.'

Having learned from my sartorial mistake, I was wondering - is it ever possible to pair a striped shirt with a striped tie? Or is it always solid/stripe and stripe/solid?

Or how about patterned ties? Can they go with stripe/check shirts?

Perhaps you intended your co-workers to say no!

It is possible to wear striped/striped.

That is actually not a good example of of matching striped tie to shirt. General rules of pattern matching is to avoid similar sizes. So small stripe with big stripe, and complimentary colors, not matching colors.

Normally, I would agree, but in whodini's case, the colors and patterns are so similar that the tie actually looks like an extension of the shirt. While it is an unconventional look, I sort of like the look.

+1. And if done careful, even stripesx3 (that is, suit with stripes, shirt with stripes and tie with stripes) can work. "Never stripes with stripes" is just one more example of these "general" statements that people make to easily. Like "never black with brown", or "never blue with brown"...

Look. It's like anything else. There are rules for the masses ("stay-on-the-paved-roads" rules). 90%+ of the world isn't going to spend the time to understand the interplay of color, pattern and texture. Consequently, "rules" like "two plains and one fancy" keep people who don't want to think about it a way from getting in trouble. The OP's girlfriend is quoting those rules. They are based on the fact that done poorly a striped tie CAN look bad with a striped shirt. You're never going to get in trouble with patterns if you combine a solid suit with a solid shirt and a patterned tie. You may get in trouble with colors or die of boredom, but you'll never get in trouble with patterns.

Then there are "rules" or, better, guidelines for those who want to move beyond the basics. These are the rules that Flusser, Manton and others discuss in the links above. One will never learn to dress in a sophisticated way without understanding and applying (or perhaps consciously ignoring) these guidelines.

ST and SS can work. You just need to mix the scale of the stripes. They can't be similar.

For example, a bold stripe tie can look great with a fine stripped shirt.

The French call this look "a la plage" and refers to having a tie that closely matches your shirt. Of course, as appled it begs the question of why you'd wear a tie at all...

(Besides, if you speak French, what does being on the beach have to do with it?)

The look was big in Italy and France six years or so ago...

Here are some of the striped patterns i wear and the combos i wear then with:

what is tough to see in the photo is that the shirt actually has a varying shade of blue stripes, which really helps it match the tie
