I have a thin merrino wool sweater from Banana Republic that would look better if it was about 1" longer. Is it possible to stretch it out? Would wetting it and pulling on it be a bad idea? Anyone ever increased the length of a wool sweater before?

Yes, it's possible. Yes, have done, usually with the sleeves. Dampening, then pulling gently and evenly, then putting weight on it (on a towel, etc) to dry in the new shape would be one way to do it. Another way uses steam. The "real" way to do it is called "blocking". Search Google for "blocking sweater" for more detailed instructions.
