Hello everyone, I am wondering what you would recommend for storing suits longterm if you cannot hang them up. I plan on putting my suits in a box for 15 months as I will be going away for a while. The suits are made of 100%wool, natural fabrics.

How should I fold them? how tight should it be? What should I watch out for? How big should the box be? Should I use moth balls? Plastic bags?

You can buy boxes that are made to hang suits.

In the US these are usually called wardrobe boxes. They come with a hang bar that rests on the top of sidewalls of the box.

can't recommend you to fold a suit for that long, especially if it's a canvas suit. We carefully fold them when shipping to clients, but we use Express service so they don't remain folded for more than 2-4 days.

If you absolutely CANNOT hang them, at least do the following:
> they should be cleaned and you should include moth killing apparatus unless you are 100% sure the box is air-tight. Add it anyway.
> the box(es) should be large enough that you can lay the suit flat without any folding.
> insert a hanger anyway and cover each suit with a plastic dry cleaner's 'bag'
> lay the suits in alternating direction, so the 'thicker' top end alternates.

Good luck.

Check with an upscale dry cleaner in your area. Mine lets me store stuff seasonally and permanently (e.g.,wife's wedding dress).

Thank you for all of your replies:
What if you store the suits inside a suitbag or briefcase, of course loosely packed??????? Can my suits last 15 months in storage? If I dry-clean them before hand and put loads of mothballs inside the bag.

My collection is:
10 suits \\\\fully canvased, fabrics using 100% non-synthetic material
4 suits \\\\ Glued or Half-canvased, mix fabrics using over 60% non-synthetic material with polyester, nylon ect.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
