Hi all, I was wondering where you NorCal/South Bay denizens go for clothing and tailoring? I did some searches but only came up with shoe recommendations and one recommendation for "Manuel's" from a while back for a tailor.

Where do you all go for your dress clothing? Where are the best tailors, the best deals, etc? Any help would be appreciated, as my only friend with high dress sense is brand new to California.

I did some research on this a couple weeks ago as I need to get a suit tailored. The two tailors in the south bay I saw recommended most were Manuel's and Riccardo's Tailoring. I haven't any work with either tailor done yet so I can't comment on their quality.

Are you just looking for tailoring recommendation (which I have none) or shopping in general? If latter, there is a good bit of decent shopping to be done at the Stanford Mall and in SF city.

I guess I'm mostly looking for one solid tailor and then wondering where the northern California SFers browse for clothes. Stanford Mall and a bit of Valley Fair/Santana Row are great, didn't know whether there were some independent shops or any second-hand stores of note.

There are no really good high-end clothing stores in the Peninsula/South Bay.
Wilkes has a branch in Palo Alto as does Nieman Marcus. The selection
is far more limited that their San Francisco counterparts. Also, I
dislike Niemans in general. It doesn't accord with my taste. If Nordstom's
or Macy's is what you're looking for, there are several branches in the
area. Same for a little Brooks Brothers in Palo Alto. For me, Nordstroms and
Brooks are good for socks and not much else. And I just remembered, a
Polo shop in Palo Alto.

An excellent alterations tailor In Menlo Park.
(He does work for Wilkes, Palo Alto)

Outlet Shop in San Francisco
worth checking out regularly.

Jeremys
2 South Park,
SanFrancisco 94107

The sell overstock from mens stores such as Bergdorf,
Barneys, Niemans, Saks, etc. If one is lucky, one
can buy Brioni, Isaia, Oxxford as well as $300 jeans and
the like for a fraction of regular price. For the last 6 months
or so, their inventory of tailored clothing has been limited.

Wonderful, thanks all. This was most helpful. Smaller sizes aren't of much concern to me, I'm a 48L and a size 13 shoe

what about the stores on Santana Row? I haven't spent much time in San Jose, and none there, but I understand that it is pretty high end. You're not likely to find Japanese denim, but I'm sure there are some good stores as far as suits and dress shirts go.

High-end is in the mind ( and wallet of the beholder)
Sanatana Row has the usual suburban crap plus small versions
of the larger chains that are in San Francisco. There is an
independent mens store called Eli Thomas. They sell
mid- priced Italian clothing on the flashy side. If
they brought back the Sopranos, Silvio could buy
his entire wardrobe from them. Depsite their
style, which I dislike, the staff are knowledgeable
and accommodating. Full disclosure"” I bought a
pair of jeans from them 3 plus years ago.

You might actually do well at Jeremys.
I'm a 44R/L and the rack always seems to
have more larger sizes. Athough, as I have
said, there has been a relative scarcity of
tailored clothing the past six months or so.

Any recommendations for custom (MTM or bespoke) shirts in San Jose. I would like to buy someone a gift certificate.

I did a google search and came up with Franco Uomo and Hive & Colony but would like to hear from the good folks here too.

There is nothing in the San Jose area that could be remotely considered high end, depending, I suppose, on what is meant by that.

I guess I'm mostly looking for one solid tailor and then wondering where the northern California SFers browse for clothes. Stanford Mall and a bit of Valley Fair/Santana Row are great, didn't know whether there were some independent shops or any second-hand stores of note.
I browse in London and Florence.

Santana Row has Suit Supply. Not really high-end, but if it fits your budget it can be a solid choice.

No. Under no circumstances should you give your money to Franco Uomo.

There are traveling tailors that regularly visit the Bay Area. Some only come to San Francisco, but still. These include Divij Bespoke, Anderson & Sheppard, Edward Sexton for tailoring. Budd (for shirts) comes, too. For shoes, Gaziano & Girling comes to SF, as does Nicholas Templeman. There may be other companies, but those are the ones that come to mind. Sadly, there used to be more, but Steed and Steven Hitchcock no longer come to San Francisco.

The city of San Francisco, along with San Mateo County and Santa Clara county,
which comprise Silicon Valley, are among the top 15 wealthiest counties in the
US in terms of per capita income, yet there are no quality bespoke tailors nor
bespoke or MTM shirtmakers in the area that I am aware of. As Andy57 has
pointed out, several travelling tailors who are popular with SF members have
stopped visiting San Francisco.
