Store discounts

    Hello everybody,

    I saw a commercial on TV concerning storewide discounts of 10% or 15% for one of those dept retail stores. But, when I went in and tried to buy some items, I was told this didn't apply to the items I wanted to buy. Has anyone ever had these problems. It seems like only the items I wanted were excluded.

    I'm trying to figure out which items are automically not going to be included so I don't waste my time next time going to the store. I don't think the TV ad mentioned any exclusions. THX.

    Designer and "better brand" items are nearly invariably excluded from this type of sale. To get good deals, you need to know the schedule by which designer items are marked down (usually permanently.) Like all things, bargain hunting requires practice. You can bet your buttons that the worst dressed people usually paid a higher price than the best dressed people. Stylists, buyers, and everyone else related to the industry know all the sample and showroom sales and best consignment stores in addition to the usual Barneys and Bergdorfs.

    My wife gets those Bloomingdales/Macy's sale announcements at a rate of two to three per week, and if you read the small print, it usually lists all the brands NOT included in the sale. I guess it's a common practice. As a rule of thumb, assume everything that might be of interest to you will NOT be included :)

    THis is probably a really stupid question, but what exactly is a
    'designer' or 'better brand name' item.

    At these retail stores, it seems everything is a designer or brand-name item.

    Could you please further explain the schedule of designer item markdowns. Sometimes, I would see a certain brand dress shirt on sale for a few weeks, and then it would be back to full retail price. A few weeks later, it would go back on sale.

    Typically Bloomingdale's allows discounts on better brand & some designer items. Macy*s is extremely restrictive on using coupons and usually excludes all designer/better brands. Normally, these coupons are valid only on items that are already reduced at both stores.

    At Macys*s better brands would include, but are not limited to: DKNY, Kenneth Cole, Hugo Boss, FCUK, Diesel, Polo, Tommy, etc. They do not allow you to use the coupons on these brands.

    At Bloomingdale's they allow you to use the discount on all the above brands and Bloomies tends to carry more upscale better brands such as Theory, Paul Lafontaine, Hugo Boss, etc. Here at the Bloomies NY store they carry designer brands such as John Varvatos, Michael Kors, Comme des Garcons, Armani Collezioni, Helmut Lang, Marc Jacobs, etc. Bloomies will allow you to use the discount (usually 15% or 20% off) on most of these brands as well.

    As for the markdown schedule typically there is a set schedule and if you come back once every couple of weeks you begin to learn that schedule. Also, at a store like Bloomingdale's get in the know with a nice SA, (they call them brand specialists) who can call you when things get marked down and put them aside for you (like they can do at Saks).

    You can really do well with sales at Bloomingdale's.

    Thanks for the info. The reason I was asking about the sale schedule is my friend works in retail, and he would ask the manager if and when certain items would go on sale. The manager told him that he didn't know, and that there was no set schedule. It was all determined by the central office that day.

    Interesting, I never knew Bloomies would give discounts on their designer items. I thought that maybe the reason discounts weren't included on designer items were because the desingers prohibited this. Maybe they didn't want their merchandise to be cheapened, and were trying to keep it exclusive.
