Hello styleforum members,

I went around Jermyn Street to obtain a neckband/tunic shirt from Harvie & Hudson and a Arundel Eton collar from New & Lingwood, in total for 79 pounds. (including front/back studs) I wish to wear this stunning outfit for Sunday church.

Could some learn-ed folks of style forum advise me on the following questions?

1. Can the neckband shirt be cleaned in the washing machine like a normal white shirt?
2. Some tips for wearing such an shirt?
3. How to clean a stiff collar?
4. How to wear a neckband shirt with a stiff collar properly?

Cheers!

Let me take a first stab at answering your questions and let others chime in:

1. Yes, thos shoud pose no problem - I recommend 30 degrees Celsius and handwash cycle and let drip dry (don't tumble dry or it will shrink and not fit to the collar. Depending on the shirt's makeup you may need to use starch in the collar area to ensure a proper fit of the collar.
2. Pretty much like every other shirt chosing the right style clothing for the shirt and collar type. Remember, in the past (some 100 years ago) this was the usual shirt type and the attached collars only came to replace the detachable ones presumably with the avent of automatic washing machines butthe were still worn similarly. If worn properly and with a tie or bow tie, you actually don't see much of a difference between a shirt with separate collar versus one with attached collar. The prior just gives you more options to combine with different collar styles (which is why I'd recommend if you've gone down this route to buy a few more suitable and differently shaped collars for your shirt and maybe another shirt or two)
3. Same as the shirt - I'd just put the collar in one of these washing nets to give it a bit of protection. Make sure to iron it with starch to make sure it retains its stiffness. You can get starch spray at most stores selling washing detergents.
4. There are some helpful tips here: http://www.premierclothing.com/mens-detachable-collar-instructions-cleaning

Enjoy your new shirt in good health!
