Well, like many of you here, I was shocked to find that Johnston & Murphy shoes suck. You know, everyone I knew thought J&M was the bee's knees. Then I discovered Allen Edmonds and never looked back.

But now I'm looking forward. Where do people tend to go after hitting a mid-tier brand like AE? Part of the reason I've stayed with AE so long is that they fit my odd feet very well (9.5 EE) and still have some respectable models left.

Still, I'm interested in branching out and was wondering what to try. I've looked at C&J for a while...but I've been nervous to bite the bullet and fork over the cash.

Thoughts?

I would go C&J personally

That is what I did at least. They move on from there maybe to some Alden casuals and cordovan, etc.

Alfred Sargent Premier is a good step up from AE. Fairly high quality and prices are reasonable.

I would go something European to balance out traditional American / English style.

Santoni could be a good option for you.

I picked up a pair of JM Weston shoes not long ago. Very happy with them.

I agree with aleeboy, go for something European. I like Folk Shoes which look better the more you wear 'em and they are super comfortable from day one. Here are some detailed pics from my blog. http://afinancialstatement.blogspot....by-oxford.html

Best incremental step is either John Lobb Prestige or EG Top Drawer. Anything less is a step backwards.
