I wonder what the hell they expected in getting Stephen Colbert. If they didn't want to laugh at a parody of the inane talking heads permeating cable news and the sunday talk shows, they shouldn't have hired Colbert. Who killed, though nobody in the audience seemed to notice.

Oh, I think they got him. But he didn't just attack the president, and considering that his speech has been very explicitly ignored in nearly every mainstream media report on the event (it was even cut from rebroadcast on CSPAN), it's rather clear that you can attack the president or you can attack the media, but if you do both and draw attention to real problems, you will be ignored. Ten years ago, without the internet, this would never have gotten anywhere.

I'll grant you that the media is no fan of reporting on criticism of itself. And while Colbert may have made some good points, that doesn't mean he was funny.

Too much dead air. Also, he went after the audience, not bringing them in on the joke but just attacking them. I'm not saying he's wrong, but I can see why they didn't laugh.
