Gotcha. Not to drag this out too far, but even if most labels charged the equivalent of "midrange prices" back in the day, i still find it interesting that SS would continue to keep their prices around that level while other brands with a similar aesthetic/quality would raise their prices much higher (like what steveoffice said above)

As I wrote earlier, most other brands in SS's price bracket position themselves as "contemporary" brands-- and while that's a super nebulous term, and it's hard to define the boundary between what's "contemporary," what's "luxury," etc, for me SS occupies an interesting territory where it has all the visual elements of a much more expensive brand at two-thirds the price. And that's kinda cool. Not something I see often.

It is also something I don't see often and enjoy quite a bit. The lines are quite blurred with the aesthetics you describe. We're lucky it didn't start with full branding/marketing and ended up selling $800 Cardigans. I read somewhere SS hates consumerism of fashion or something along those lines.

I really get the feeling Schneider enjoys making clothes when I look at his pieces; I love the fact that it feels like I'm actually wearing something idiosyncratic which provided the designer with as much fulfillment as it does for me...not a sense I get from very many other labels...

Well, I have some pieces, but certainly not as many as some here, and I've handled a bunch more, including a really awesome blue/teal moleskin jacket from @sipang that I wish I'd kept, since it would fit me now (I was 23 lbs lighter then), and the make is as good as pretty much anything I've handled, excluding the some of the smaller, very expensive, classic menswear brands. The Paraffin jacket that I have retailed somewhere around $600 (higher some places, a bit lower others), which is unheard of for many designer pieces these days, much less a wool jacket.

Some of his things just won't fit me (everytime I put on a sportsjacket, I feel like I am about to go full hulk on the arms, and I only feel really big when I am in Asia) and some of this thinner knits, while really nice, are just a bit too precious for my personal use, but those things of his that I have and wear, I really like.

so what's the deal with the @ thing ? is it just an easy link to the member profile or does it send a notification ? because i didn't get a notification just now

I can't wear any of the more recent tailored stuff either, that goes for both the sportjackets/blazers and the coats, but the long structured outerwear stuff he put out around 2006/7 is something of a beauty.

sw dropped schneider because they got TOO popular (ie, too many other competing stock lists), not because they weren't popular enough

post-read, slightly disappointed there wasn't a newly unearthed trove of wine bee cardigans though

Still don't buy that explanation, they still carry Gitman and BoO for fuck's sake. And there's less competition now, not more.

gitman and boo are about as big as it gets in midrange shirting, it's less a competition thing for them than an absolute demand one

schneider just doesn't have the name recognition/appeal to be able to sell the way gitman and boo do (I think by design, and better for the brand really). fewer stocklists this season seems to speak to that to some extent

gauging demand is weird. i can't say anything about schneider, but I was surprised how quickly stores have been selling their lemaire stuff. it's similar to schneider, a smallish company that recently has enjoyed a pretty nice upswing, but i still didn't expect demand to be as high as it was. it's like-- i live in my styleforum bubble and know fairly well how brands are received here, but out there in the wild it's a total wash

Well the stores probably also order less stock of the smaller brands like Schneider or Lemaire so it's hard to say whether the demand is truly there or if just the 3-4 people in the world that wanted the piece in that size ordered it.
