I highly recommend having a steamer. I have been using my steamer for the last 6 months with great results every time. I have a cheap little one from black and decker and its basically just a glorified electric kettle, (no control over the steam/pressure) and it works wonders on suit jackets and shirts that need a little touching up. Certainly not a replacement for an iron when it comes to shirts, but for general suit maintenance I highly recommend one.

I'm sure they have been discussed at length here, but to any newbies this should be one of the first additions to your wardrobe.

I was hoping you meant an LV steamer trunk.

What do you think the airlines would charge to check a steamer today?

They'd probably give you a discount since their luggage handlers would have so much fun kicking the **** out of it on purpose. An LV steamer trunk that costs as much as good used car? That's like Xmas in July....

Plus TSA would probably rip the locks off and leave the trunk open.

Exactly... and they'd be quite justified, IMHO. Certainly there are some LV hard-sided suitcase travelers on commercial flights (I always see one or two amongst my Japanese co-passengers on return flights from Narita), but a full-on Steamer trunk is best fitted into the BBJ. Personally, I'd like a Goyard with some fancy-schmancy wildly-colored stripes and initialing.

I've seen people use the vintage soft-sided suitcases, one time a complete set on an older couple.

To the OP - I agree, with a caveat. Some fabrics do NOT react well to steam. They shrivel up to a degree that is hard to restore by pressing. So use with care.

Any particular examples you noticed? This may be helpful for me in the future.

Op, I agree. I bought one of couple of weeks ago and it will pay for itself in no time by reducing my drycleaning bill and improving the longevity of my clothes.
