Staying cool and functional in the summer, without wearing shorts

I live in New York and walk around outside a lot in the summer. It's HOT.
What are some good outfits to keep cool?
I like the functional nature of khaki shorts and a polo short -- it keeps me really cool -- but I also look like a father who just stepped off the golf course. Hate the look.
What do you guys wear to keep as cool (or cooler) in the summer? Particularly a city look ... photos appreciated.

My personal favorite is:

White Linen Shirt: J. Crew, Ralph Lauren, etc. J. Crew has them in slim and tall sizes.

Navy Essex Pants (J. Crew): http://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/pants/essexpants.jsp?navLoc=left_nav
-These also come in whatever fit you want.

Boat shoes: http://www.onlineshoes.com/mens-spe...iginal-2-eye-salt-stained-barnwood-p_id244739

I can't do sandals. My feet get really dirty and people step on my toes.

That said, Kent Wang's polos are pretty awesome. You could sub them in for the linen shirt and probably not look too "dad"-ish.

Some may suggest a linen blazer, which you can do, but if it is really hot out, I prefer only one layer.

Eat lots of these to help cool you down...

...and remember to lean forward so as not to dribble on yourself.

A dollar store hand held battery operated fan also does wonders.

I wear summer pinpoint shirts, they are open weave, and fresco suits. It can get uncomfortable, but certainly bearable.

I wear mostly just polos and chinos when running errands.

Linen pants, loose fit, plain colour. 100% cotton , or linen long sleeves with sleeves rolled up. Old tie to use as a belt and add a touch of colour. Panama hat. Medium brown leather caps with socks (more formal) or suede Tods driving loafers without socks.

Cotton-linen pants look less wrinkled and more sophisticated than pure linen pants. Also, head-to-toe linen probably would look strange.

Also from NYC, whatever you wearing, make sure you have a v neck t shirt on. A thicker t shirt will soak up sweat faster and keep you cooler.

Bah. Cotton-linen Incotex wear much hotter than my pure linen pants. I enjoy both, and will continue to buy both, but 100% linen is superior at > 85F.

Viccel summer weight socks are awesome.
