The fact that the IDW comics are being considered canon was confirmed directly by Roberto Orci. He is one of the writers and producers of this movie and also had a similar role on the first one.

Besides this, you must of course realize that this is all part of a large marketing and media effort based on the Star Trek property. There is a level of organization here and when the decision was made to start an ongoing comic series it was done so to appeal to certain fan's desires to flesh out and expand the rebooted universe. To not have a level of continuity between the various media being used to tell these stories would be illogical.

To contrast the above I'd like to bring up a point: If George Lucas is willing to fabricate characters and shit on the heads of his fans I don't see why JJ Abrams couldn't either.

If you eliminate the impossible whatever remains however improbable is invariably true.

Thus, it's a pseudonym for Kahn.

Doubtful, at least him being one of Khan's guys / rival faction guy, because:
Wouldn't "from within their own organization" rule out all of Khan's men or their rivals? They wouldn't be part of starfleet...

At some point, i'm sure inconsistencies will happen. This rebooted universe has potential to be considered the main canon for years to come. It's reasonable to assume that decisions will be made down the line to tell stories that may contradict earlier narratives. The point being made here is that right now care is being taken to prevent that from happening.

Who's to say that in this rebooted universe the Botany Bay wasn't discovered years earlier by Starfleet? Or that other survivors from the Eugenics Wars were awakened? It's just a theory and I could well be wrong, but keep in mind that there is a level of freedom provided to JJ and crew in how they tell these stories. Technically anything after the moment Nero arrived can be different then the universe we grew up with.

No doubt that this has been part of the film's marketing campaign. Called that fact out in my original post. I find the speculation on the villian fun and it has been a smart move on the studio's part to play it this way. Generating a lot of buzz for the film which will be in danger of being overshodowed by news of the forthcoming Star Wars films once details start to hit.

Here's something else to ponder. We know Peter Weller has been cast for the film, but they have provided very few details about his role. Normally this early in the game that wouldn't mean much, but you have to consider two thing.

    1. He's a well known name in Sci-Fi. If I were in-charge of marketing this movie to it's core audience, I would think it foolish not to put him and his role out to help increase buzz.

    2. It's odd that all they have said so far is he plays a "CEO" which is decidedly a very un-Star Trek roll.

So where am I going with this? Well if fans are willing to engage in mental gymnastics to try and explain how they could cast a pasty man with a thick British accent as Khan, it stands to believe they would have far less trouble accepting one who looks like this.

He's not the right nationality, but truthfully neither was Ricardo Montalbán. So what if Weller's character is Khan? While everyone is speculating who Crumby plays, they manage to sneak Khan into the film another way. Having Khan make an apparence, but not be the film's main villian could easily fit into the theories I have posted before.

People aren't focusing on the important thing - what happened to all the lens flare!?

All the more reason that my speculation here may hold water. :nodding:

I've read that the lens flares have greatly been toned down in the footage shown so far. Not that I hated them in the first film, like it appears some did. :embar:
