Hard to say. I found it to be a letdown to a certain extent. The whole freewheeling "tutor" system could be described by a cynic as an excuse for faculty laziness. When the discussion is totally student-led, it can lack direction and idiots can rule.

On the other hand, I would not want to un-read anything I read there, and working through all of Euclid, Newton, and Lobachevsky was priceless, and not something I would ever have done on my own.

I think it is close to irrelevant in the working world. It's not going to open many, if any, doors. This is something you have to be committed to doing for its own sake, or don't do it.

When I did it, I was sure I was going into academics. Didn't work out that way.

Then again, I think that unless you went to a super-top-tier college, the provenance of your degree probably does not matter, so you may as well go where you want.

I neglected to mention that I had a colleague who went there. He had nothing but good things to say about it. And while I can't tell you how much credit is due to St. John's, he had one of them most graceful, open and capable intellects I have encountered.

I notice from their MALA handbook that classes tend to bunch up on Monday and Thursday evenings. Does that imply that many of the grad students have real lives elsewhere, or is it more or less a residential experience?
