Spring/resort dilemma

I just picked up a pair of cream-colored wool gabardine pants for summer (a $250 Polo leftover from summer, for $75 at Macys).  What are your thoughts on the best shoe and belt colors?  I've seen black paired with light pants, but it seems a bit harsh.  Does anyone have strong thoughts on the best shade of brown"”a warm reddish brown, a mid-brown, or another shade?  Maybe even black is fine.  Thanks, and looking forward to your recommendations.
