I'm thinking about a sports coat. It will be tailored.
It would be my first. Thus I have no experience with them.

What is the typical construction regarding shoulders, lining, length, shape, fused, semi fused, canvassed etc?

cheers.

This is a hard question to answer. It depends how much you're planning to spend, and where you're planning to spend that money.

Construction could be anything. Give examples.

length enough to at least cover your butt. or a little more if you wish.
bemberg i think is the nicest. something a bit fancy.
canvassed naturally
at least some waist shaping not boxy.
a sport coat looks the part when it has patch pockets.

What is this craze of patch pockets? I've owned sport coats since the '60s. Never with patch pockets. I hate patch pockets.

Not really a patch pocket fan myself. Especially not patch breast pockets. But I'd like to get a patch pocket sports coat at some point. I typically prefer hacking pockets.

Try on different SC's and take note of the strengths and sizing you want to incorporate into yours.

I hate patch breast pockets as well....although I will admit there are times it looks ok; personally i will never buy a jacket with one though.

However, I think a navy SJ with patch pockets looks really sharp, esp if it has pick stitching.

With a pair of slim trousers it really does look sharp.

I love patch pocket so much i bought a jack victor SJ with patch pockets for 160 i liked it so much and the armholes are so low and fits so terribly i want to burn it.

Thought you may care lol

Thanks for the replies.

I assume from some of the replies that the same points when having a suit jacket made applies for the Sports Coat.

I have tried a few on and they don't fit properly.
But the ones I tried on all had no lining and the padding in the shoulder was barely there.

Which essentially means they're summer sports coats. Before you go any further, do yourself a big favour:

Maybe. The jacket I was wearing yesterday is unlined and in no way summery.

What details should someone look for in choosing their first sports jacket? eg One solid navy colour and fullly lined?

It seems some/most people dont like patch pockets or brass buttons (blazer) so what makes sport coats unique from suit jackets/blazers?

I find that tweed sports coats are very popular with patch hip pockets in the UK, as are navy blazers...
