Sportcoat to a wedding?

I believe a sportscoat to a wedding is against the "rules", but I'm wondering how many of you would still wear it? Wedding starts at 4pm, there is no official dress code on the invitation but it is safe to assume it is the modern interpretation of semi-formal, with most guys in suits.

It's not a case of not having a suit, I may still wear one. But I spend all week in suits and I've been brainwashed by group-think to love the sportscoat and grey trousers look done well. Just wondering how outside the lines I am.

At most weddings these days there's a chance you will see a broad range of outfits. I was at a fairly formal church wedding once and there was a young fella in a white round neck t shirt and khakis.

There are precious few chances these days to really get dressed up so I say go for the suit. If you feel like you are dressing for work then always keep one or two suits, and especially a few less conservative shirt and tie combinations, to wear only on social occasions such as these. That way you will feel good getting dressed and not feel like you're on the way to the office.

It depends on the wedding, but if you expect everyone else to be in suits then you should wear a suit as well.

The wedding isn't about you, you're a guest. Dress to fit in, not to stick out like a sore thumb.
