Sport of Duffle Coat?

Any forumite will instill that either is de rigueur but sadly my wardrobe lacks a suitable example of either. I have a tweed blazer/fall coat with epaulets from Banana Republics, a motorcycle jacket (not designer lamb so decidedly warmer) and a down nylon-like jacket (my warmest that I seldom wear). However, I don't have an elegant wool outwear piece for the heart of Long Island/NYC winters and I'm about to invest in a Gloverall or A.P.C. (or something along those lines) duffel coat with toggles. It'll keep me warm and in style during the heart of the winter. Unfortunately, yesterday I peaked into the Bloomingdale's SoHo store and tried on a Navy blazer from an Italian designer I have never heard of it. It was 100% merino wool but fit like a glove. By virtue of the fabric, it had natural shoulders and surprisingly the sleeves were the perfect length. Almost any time I reach for a tapered blazer the drawback is that the sleeve are too short. Perhaps, the best fit I've ever encountered and for a while now the navy blazer has been on my wish list. It had all the accents I love too: patch pockets, silver buttons. And pre-sale markdowns brought it to 585 from 900. The last time a navy blazer has gotten me this excited was the RLBL Anthony, but that is twice the price. The rub is that I can only purchase one or the other at this time. What's worse is that, if I were to go with the duffel coat and since I have exacting specifications, I may not find a blazer that I like quite as much for a while. However, if I went with the blazer, the winter will be colder (I managed fine last yr with my leather jacket, but it's not as if I wasn't cold at times.) Furthermore, the blazer savors more of an indulgence (at least I try to convince myself that the duffel is not an indulgence). The blazer was held for me overnight, but I'm leaning towards the duffel at the moment. I wish I could swing for both, but I can only pander to my sartorial demons to the tune of 400-600 dollars for the next few months. What do you guys think? A well fitting blazer is a superlatively versatile item in one's wardrobe and could be worn in so many different contexts, yet a duffel coat-like piece is indispensable too. At this point, I wish I never casually stepped into Bloomingdale's yesterday. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
