I've debated this with folks here before, but I think for all but the tallest of dudes, jackets worn with odd pants generally and jeans particularly should be shorter than a standard suit jacket. If this isn't done, the jacket makes the look top-heavy and dumpy. One inch minimum, probably no more than two.

Surely covering the seat is still mandatory though? I have a Teba jacket that I wear casually with jeans and chinos and it barely covers my backside. Feel a little self-conscious wearing it.

Here are a few jeans and sport coat pics that I quickly pulled off Google. They are all a bit different (low vs higher rise, darker vs medium wash, tie vs no tie, etc.) but they all look pretty good and would be easy for just about anyone here to pull off. It's really about the setting and confidence in your own personal style to pull it off.

I think you have to treat the jacket less like a tailored piece and more like casual outerwear. So, maybe not a full-on bumfreezer, but a bumchiller would be okay for me.

I disapprove of what you wear, but I will defend to the death your right to wear it. Just because you built a fashion empire doesn't mean you're fashionable, Ralph. You did not win a CFDA or have a runway show in Paris because of your awesome personal style. Also, decreasing the pool of people that can tell him not to do something won't guarantee that he'll listen to them. On a separate note, man I hate those wide shoulders.

I don't do the denim+SC look often - I generally prefer chinos - but I do think it can work. When I've done it in the past I've usually reached for gray tweed, brown flannel, tan linen, things like that (depending on the weather). I've never tried the navy on navy, I just haven't felt good about it whenever I looked in the mirror.

I don't have many pics, here's what I found:

Suitsupply herringbone flannel, APC new standard (man I wish the rise was higher!)

This one doesn't really count but it is still tailored clothing, so whatever. This closer to a more tonal thing but given that the coat isn't that dark and also has a pronounced donegal fabric, I felt is was easier to pull off.

I've posted a number of pics last week and this week not because I'm in love with them but for variety, discussion and positive or negative inspiration (sometimes it's good to be reminded what elements you want to avoid). Styleforum tends to draw a fairly tech/academic crowd who often times seeks to reduce looks and styles to a repeated formula. Although many of those formulas are helpful, I like to leave room for for more individual style and realizing that style, looks and fits evolve. And, yes I can't stand those wide shoulders either but when Ralphy was hitting his stride in the late 70's he was having his suits and jackets made that way by NYC and London tailors and he has kept that as his own personal look. Good for him, but not for me.

Got me there. I'm a math teacher. I love a good formula and a good counterexample. I think many of us here are in various stages of appreciation and understanding of this look. I think your patchwork jeans and blue blazer fit along with EFV's double denim with bandana are excellent non formulaic looks. Thanks for pushing the conversation.
