Sport Coat sizing and weight change

I got a question. I'm currently losing weight so that I can be in better shape. I started at a 42s sport coat. I went and tried on a 40s and 38s today. My current chest size is 39 inches. I intend to lose more weight and get to around a 38 chest. My question is, with losing this weight, I'm afraid of weight fluctuation. I may gain a little weight back here and there. The 40s I tried on fit well but just a tad lose and the 38s I tried on fit but was just a tad tight. I don't know whether to get the 40s and it becomes more loose after more weight lost or the 38s and it fits just right but any weight gain pushes me back to feeling more comfortable in the 40s. I know this question is more of a subjective question because of how a person wants a sport coat to fit, but I can't decide. I intend to get around 3 or 4 sport coats and don't want to have to get them in both sizes. Any experience with this is helpful. Thank you for your time.

My advice is to wait and see if you maintain. Especially when you're looking at buying 3 or 4. If you can maintain for 2 months after reaching your goal, then go ahead. When you're in a situation that is between sizes, it's always better to buy the larger and have it taken in. Then if you gain wait again you can have it let out again.

Thanks for your response. I'm gonna add one more important variable. I had a wide weight range which allowed me to constantly wear a 42s whether it was up or down in weight. I'm just now at a weight where the weight lost allowed me to get into the 40s. Thats why I wasn't sure about moving forward to the 38s.

I wanna wait and should wait, but I'm missing out on some sales at different websites which is making me get impatient, lol. Judging by your post I should either get the 40s and have it taken in a bit if I can't wait, OR, wait and see if I can maintain the weight to comfortably wear the 38s at all times. Thank you very much for your time and response.

Hard to answer this question, but some coats are cut a little roomier on purpose, just for the silhouette. I have some Italian sport coats that fit very close to the body, so any weight changes can distort the silhouette. Other sport coats are a bit roomier, and thus more forgiving.

I think the best route is to wait until your weight stabilizes. But when you purchase something, aim for a roomier cut. Hard to describe this online without putting you in a few sample coats. My tailor Steed cuts a slightly roomier coat by default. If you look up their Instagram, you can see what I mean.
