SPORT COAT OR ORPHANED SUIT JACKET?

Gentlemen,

Being a newbie, I'd like to solicit your opinion regarding a potential sport coat purchase. I'm on the lookout for a navy sport coat and came across this one (shown in the pic below). The problem is that I'm worried that this particular sport coat could be mistaken for an orphaned suit jacket. The material is 100% worsted wool and and the jacket is completely lined. The pockets are jetted and not patch ones, which might be an issue for a sport coat. The pattern is a subdued check one, as you can see in the picture.

The sartorial circles define sportcoat as having certain features like patch pockets, contrasting buttons, a rustic or at least non worsted texture etc.. This sportcoat in question misses all of these characteristics.

The fit is simply terrific, by the way.

What's your opinion regarding it? Should I go ahead with it or would you take it for an orphaned suit jacket as well? The manufacturer, by the way, claims it as a sport coat (it's marked as SC on the manufacturer tag inside). Having said that, this jacket gives a vague look of an orphaned suit jacket... What's your opinion?

It is an acceptable sportscoat.

Not all sportscoats have a bold, "knock your socks off" pattern. Many sportscoats have a subdued pattern.

I would say that this is more of a sportscoat than a suit coat. As a suit it would be more of a "casual" or "sports" suit rather than a business suit.

As for the jetted pockets, that is OK too. There is no ironclad rule that says that sports coats must have flapped pockets or patch pockets. The jetted pockets make it a little dressier.

You can always change the buttons with either a metal blazer button or a middle or light brown horn button.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
