Sport coat lighter than trousers

What do you think of the "rule" that a sport coat should never be lighter than the trousers with which is worn? A quick glance at the WAYWRN thread seems to indicate that quite a few of you would say "rubbish", but still...

I realize that some combos, such as a white or near-white jacket with metal buttons and dark trousers will make you look like a steward on an atlantic liner, but surely, say, a medium grey jacket with navy blue trousers would be a nice look?

Repeat after me: "There is no such rule".

Navy blue trousers rarely look good when not part of a suit. My Dad insists on wearing odd navy blue trousers and it doesn't flatter him at all.

Also, tread carefully on combining a darker pant with a lighter sport coat as it looks bad 90% of the times.

Hmm I wore a mid-light gray windowpane sport coat today with charcoal pants. I hope I fall into the good 10%, but I'm sure I'll keep doing it regardless. Otherwise, I'm not sure what I would wear my mid-light gray windowpane sport coat with.

Most of people here know how to do it and do it right. I'm thinking more of the general public with their navy slacks and gray orphaned suit jackets. From recent WAYWRN examples:
