Sport Coat / Blazer

I'm a CPA that works in a business casual office, ties are frowned upon. I typically wear a dress shirt, cuffed and pleated wool dress slacks, alden casual shoes and a sport coat or blazer. I need to replace most of my current sport coats and I'm looking for ideas on which brands I should consider.

I'm fifty, wear a 44L and have a 34" waist. I swim regularly and have muscular shoulders and upper back, all my current jackets tend to feel tight across the back when I move and I'd like to upgrade to higher quality. I prefer conservative single breasted two button and like lighter weight wool that I can wear year round.

The problem is that there aren't any decent mens clothing stores where live. The nearest is a mall with Nordstrom and a Brooks Brothers about 1 hour away.

All suggestions appreciated.

You sound like you have a build similar to mine. Best sport coats I've found so far have been Southwick. I think the lightly padded natural shoulder works well, but is not perfect. I too frequently experience problems with pulling across the back of the jacket when I move, and armholes are a constant source of frustration as my lats are somewhat large.

If anyone has better suggestions, I'd also be interested.

Any possibility you might get a better fit with a size 46L?

It is going to be hard for anyone to give you counsel about "upgrading to better quality" when you don't give us any idea of the quality level you are wearing now. If you are presently wearing, say, Canali, the answers will be a lot different than if you are wearing Ralph Lauren Chaps.

Most of my jackets were purchased some years ago from Marshall Fields. The best are a couple Hart Schaffner Marx blazers. Most are names I've never heard of.

Where does one find Southwick?

Thanks, I'll have to plan a road trip. There's quite a bit on Sierra Trading Post.

I worked for one of the Big Eight CPA firms for a year after college. We all wore suits and did not remove our jackets even when working in the back office or verifying the accuracy of an inventory at a manufacturing plant.

Things sure have changed - including the number of Big CPA firms.

Cheers, Jim.

Try the Brooks Brothers standard line of products. I'm sure you can get a nice navy blazer there that will fit properly for your body type.
