Been a long time since I had a "what to wear" question but hoping to draw on the wisdom of the forum.

So, I bought this sport coat without realizing A) how much it looks like an orphaned suit and B) it's non-returnable. I'm debating whether I should simply try to punt it on, or try to make it useful given the fit is actually pretty good OTR.

The color IRL is sort of a muted navy that reads as grayish in lower light. Any hope of finding trouser combinations that avoid looking like I'm wearing the top half of a suit? Not crazy about the brown or tan they are using on the model. I almost want to go to one extremely with dark navy or light gray. Or should I just bin the jacket and start over?

There’s no returning it, so make the best of it. Swap out the buttons for brown or light brown to make it appear a bit more casual.

Personally think you should just move on to a different jacket.

Thanks gents.... pretty hopeless eh? I may try the button change, won't cost much after all. But in the meantime will look for other options.

Americans seem to get more hung up on the horror of orphaned suit jackets than Europeans. Here in Italy that jacket would be fine with contrasting trousers—it’s got a large windowpane pattern and patch pockets. But I also get the concern. If you decide to keep it, take solace in the fact that these days most men know almost nothing about what constitutes a suit, if they even own one. Disapproval is thus likely to be scarce.

It's very common to see people in the United States wear these types of jackets as well, and you're unlikely to be met with any disapproval. I think what you're seeing is just the taste of online tailoring enthusiasts, where taste has been somewhat codified over the years as a result of many online discussions. Such discussions aren't necessarily reflective of how most people dress. It also just so happens that many such members are based in the United States.

A friend of mine wears very silky Super 150 fabrics from Harrison's Icarus book in the summer. They vaguely have the character of the OP's jacket. I think this friend of mine is well dressed. Although I don't know if I would wear that sort of fabric in grey, as grey connotes suiting to me.

I think it might look good with light gray trousers.
