Spit polishing cap toes

I know a lot of people don't like a spit shine on their shoes but I had a question. When you are doing the spit shine do you build the layers with a wax the same colour as the shoe, or a clear wax? This has been bugging me for weeks any help you guys could give would be great!

I mist with water before the final buff, but its the same physics as spit shine.

On black shoes, I use black wax polish.

On tan shoes, I typically use neutral polish.
