Hello Everyone.

We would like to formally introduce ourselves to the SF Community.

We are SPIER & MACKAY (www.spierandmackay.com), a Toronto, Canada based menswear outfit that caters to both Off-the-Rack as well as Custom Tailoring Needs.

We founded the company on the driving principle that great fitting, high quality menswear should be available to all men. We wanted to make it affordable for all men to build out and create depth in their wardrobes with essential staples as well as seasonally appropriate pieces.

Off-the-Rack:
A note on fit - Since day one, we have been collecting data from our custom program and directly applying it to our Off-the-Rack shirts. What has resulted is an incredibly well fitting shirt that is based on a true set of averages, not your typical standard block pattern. To date our custom database consists of well over 100 000 points of measurement, including fit preference. As we collect more data, we continually to refine each new cut..

A note on quality - All of our shirts begin with the fabrics. We source from some of the most highly respected mills such as Monti, Canclini and Brembana as well as top Asian producers such as Century, Hammerle and Soktas. All our shirts are sewn with 18-21 stitches/inch, single needle tailoring. We use brushed interlinings from German producer Wendler. All yokes are true 4 piece, split bias yokes. Pattern matching along all major seams. We reverse fuse our collars and have a proprietary finishing technique that keeps our collars standing strong. Finally we top off our shirts with 3.2 mm pearl buttons.

A note on value - In 2009 we set up a small joint venture shirt unit in India so we could directly control quality and cost of our shirts. This was essential in our direct model for a company of our size to achieve such incredible value while still only producing small volume batches.

Custom:
Our custom program is unique in that we draft all shirt and suit patterns from scratch, essentially offering bespoke patterns for each individual. There really is no limit on what can be achieved with our custom program. Every detail of the pattern can be adjusted to suit your needs.

Thanks for the opportunity and we warmly welcome all questions and feedback!

Rick

Claghorn, we are actually in the process of a site revamp that will include a more detailed size guide. Our current size guide can be found HERE. If there are any measurements that you are looking for specifically, please do not hesitate to ask.

The trousers fit slim with a medium rise.

Cheers!

SF Exclusive Offer on Custom Shirts.

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to take the opportunity to speak more in depth in regards to our Custom Shirt Program (www.spierandmackay.com/made_to_measure.php)

The Pattern/Fit:
Your custom shirt pattern is drafted from scratch. Essentially, you will have your own bespoke pattern marked with your name written on it. Because of this, there really is no limit on what you can do to the shirt. Collar sizes/shapes can be fully customized. We know a lot of the folk here enjoy a great customized collar!

More importantly, you can adjust for your individual shoulders slope/square as well as roll, posture, etc. The end result is a shirt that fits you better than anything else hanging in your closet and directly reflects your personal style tastes and preferences.

The Quality:
All SPIER & MACKAY shirts are made by a small team of 2nd and 3rd Generation master shirt makers in our own small factory in India. Each having a minimum of 12 years experience. Our most senior tailor has 38 years experience.
All shirts feature:
18-21 stitches/inch, single needle sewing.
4 piece, Split yoke.
Pattern Matching throughout.
16L - 3.2mm white pearl buttons. (3.9mm White Australian MOP will be available shortly +$10)
Hand turned seams, collars and cuffs.
Wendler of Germany Brushed Interlinings, considered one of the best in the industry.
Stainless Steel Collar Stays - Packed Separate.

The Collars:
We know that a good collar is a focal point in both the look of the shirt and comfort.
As mentioned before all collars can be fully customized however you like. We do have a set of default selections that are current and work well for everyday use.
As a default, our collar bands are reversed fused, in that the band is fused on the outside, rather than inside as most companies tend to do. The advantage is both superior comfort and added strength to hold the collar better. As well, we cut the inner band slightly smaller to more naturally curve around your neck as well as create a better shape to frame your face.

Of course you can have your shirt constructed with un-fused collars, collars without lining, or a combination where the band is un-fused and leaf fused, etc. You can dictate exactly what you are looking for.

Our Custom Shirt interface online is a work in progress as we kept it paired down for the average user. We do have a "Notes" section in the checkout area where you can post any specific requests (inc. monogram). We are working on an interface that will allow for the alterations/selection to be done at same time as order. Alternatively, you can simply shoot an email over to [email protected] with your order# and advise what specifics are needed.

Shirts are price at $79 & $99, all options included.

As a new affiliate, we would love for you to give us a try and for the next 30 days, we are offering $20 off your first custom shirt with us. Simply use the code SFCUSTOM20, bringing your new custom shirt to $59 or $79 respectively.

We are more than happy to answer any questions and welcome any feedback!

Rick

Hi Shirtmaven,

Not taken personally at all.

We are a Canadian company. We are located in Toronto, Canada and have our office/showroom/warehouse located here. All decisions are made from here. All our creative and marketing is done from here. Yes we manufacture in India with a JV factory, but that isn't to say we are not a proudly Canadian founded and operating company. We bring our ideas and sense of design to the table, which we feel are also inherently Canadian.

Ralph Lauren produces products all over the world and we don't think for a second that anyone would deny RL of being anything but American.

though inspiration and management is canadian
Outsourcing is the usual way these days

Canada still has some very good shirt and clothing manufacturers. But you would have to double your prices.
I have seen excellent quality from India. In fact i spoke with a very good factory in Mumbai about having them make shirts for me.
But i decided to keep all of my production domestic.

The mills you are working with all turnout excellent quality.
Of course I have not seen anything from Century Mills in over 15 years. I also buy from Hammerle and Morarjee/Brembna!

Best of luck
Carl

Canada has some great manufacturers. My father actually had a garment factory in the middle of downtown Toronto for nearly 23 years before the economic tide forced the closure in the late 90's.
We would love to bring some work back and are working towards that goal.

Thank you for the words of encouragement. Especially coming from someone as highly distinguished in this trade such as yourself.

Regards,
Rick
