Sorry to interupt but would those who have given the made in china ties a go, give me some feedback please.

I'm thinking of purchasing this purple and white polka dot number.

Thanks
Can't help with any personal experience...but for me 3.25" is too skinny. At this point I won't buy any tie under 3.5" (and I like 3.75" a lot).

I think the point was that the S&M neo cut can look a little dandyish and igenty for some, which will stand out in some contexts irrespective of formality.

Does anyone know if the US duties limit of $800USD applies to MTO orders? I'm looking at an MTO balmacaan, but am not interested in a 30% duties charge. @SpierTeam

Not in my experience. I've had multiple orders over this, each shipped direct from China and never been charged anything additional.
This happened to me and I was charged a fee. SM took care of it as a one time thing since there was a mixup with the shipment being over 800

Glad to hear they fixed it for you.

My purchase wouldn't be an error. And despite @dapperdan88 not being charged, I think I (unfortunately) have to assume that any product from any country is subject to the $800USD limit. It's too bad, since a few of Spier's MTO fabrics are just over the limit.

Yeah for me it was 3 jackets that were MTO so it was over 1500 or something

Greetings all!!
Like most. Covid changed many things and I haven’t visited this forum since then. Stopped shopping too, and had another kid

First formal event (wedding) this summer brought me back S&M
4 years of absence = LOTS of items new to me. Especially their knitwear
I’ve beeen reading through this thread for entertainment and random insights

I’ve taken chances on many final sale items. So far so good with 1 or 2 exceptions

Anyway, finally decided to post because the items sizing info vs pictures are confusing my brain. And seeing how CS usually stands by their measurements

I bought fw21 turtleneck on the left in black. XL. I like the fit. No problems there
A week later the gray one pops up and the L measurements match closely to mine. Good sign
But then i look at the pics and worry the arm length is wayyyyy offff. If anything, the fw21 version should look longer in the arms?

What do you guys think?
are S&M pics supposed to represent the real thing?
I’m 5’7, 200 lbs. most XL and xxl works with my width
But the arms would be a deal breaker I think

I would follow size charts over pictures. And overall, I would say SM charts are fairly accurate. Not perfect, of course, but I have not found any maker that is, even those in the higher price ranges.

That said, I'm 6'1" and I wear the same size as you - XL is SM sweaters. I have to imagine that any RTW sweaters would be long in the arms for you, no?

Quick question, since you’re the first I’ve come across to post about it since i started reading (5000) again

I dont own a ton of dress shoes or boots so I lack exp in this area
I’m a little in between sizes due to having a wider foot
I take 9.5 in all athletic shoes but I’ve had 9s in dress shoes before as long as they aren’t too pointy
I see a 9 on the website. Final sale

Would you recommend based on fit?

Thanks in advance for any input

If the measurement chart is to be trusted then I’m golden! The pic just threw me off

Arm length will forever be a problem for me. Short sleeves are safe for me. And there are plenty to choose from 😁

Long sleeves I’m much more careful with and look for sleeves that can be altered usually
Got a waxed jacket on the way. In L. Expecting to have to shorten sleeves

I just now am coming across your post from 2023 about pants not fitting your rear end. Lol
Last pair of S&M pants I got were the 5 pocket sondrios. Love the material
Very ccomfortable. Looks like crap with lots of dragging. I’ve stopped buying their pants since

I have 100% success with RL jeans and chinos in 34x30. Zero alterations needed

Re: Armhole

To clear up any speculation and hopefully to put this discussion to rest I’ll explain what was done with the armhole in FW21.

For a several seasons, we were hearing a few complaints and murmurings that the armholes were too low. Though sales were fine, and we were not getting any significant negative feedback, we’re always looking to make improvements. So, we thought it was time to raise the armhole. We bought several jackets from a scattering of brands within the same space to evaluate, and found a huge variation, some lower, some higher with varying levels of comfort. We discussed at length with our in-house tailors as well as our pattern maker and decided that raising 2 cm would be sufficient to make a discernable difference and improvement.

We made 2 sample rounds of the jacket, tried it and tested it. What we noticed is that you could feel the difference when compared to the previous jacket, BUT it was still comfortable and offered better range of motion with little restriction. The caveat being that if you are used to the previous jacket, it does take a little getting used to the feeling. As this was more or less in-line with a couple of the brands we purchased samples, we didn’t think this was going to be a big issue, so we went ahead.

For those speculating, when raising the armhole, the armhole width was also increased to offset the rise, this is standard practice. We didn’t just raise the armhole and make the armhole smaller as some have suggested.

The first production jackets started to arrive in late September/early October. The initial feedback was as expected, guys could notice the change, but was welcome but did take some getting used to. We also attributed that to the thicker FW fabrics, such as flannel and tweed. Our samples jackets were in simple worsteds.

During this initial period, we did not receive any alarming or negative feedback regarding the armhole, so SS22 was moved into production. It wasn’t until mid/late November we got some feedback that the armhole could be moved back down slightly. This feedback mostly on this forum and some DM’s on IG. Just talking to the shop manager now, he notes that maybe 3 or 4 guys total for the entire season, have commented on the armhole difference.

Honestly, the sales and return rate have been almost exactly in line with our projections and have kept steady. Generally, if there is a significant fit issue, we see a spike in returns of that product. This has not been the case. That said, as we are always trying to improve, we’re moving the armhole down 1 cm which should provide a good middle ground of comfort and high armhole range of motion. The change will be in the 2nd half of SS22 with the products that will arrive late March/Early April. Regardless, the SS fabrics are lighter and thinner than the FW fabrics and by default are fitting a touch looser in the armhole when directly compared.

Further to this, scooping the bottom of the armhole can be done and lowered that 1 cm if needed. If you are having an issue, you can reach out to CS and we can help out.

Hop this clears things up and put this to bed.
The armhole on the 38 slim is a bit too high. Can it be tailored to be more than 1 cm lower?

Question for those who’ve ordered a sport coat or suit in Dino Filarte cloth.

What did you think of it? Is it noticeably different from the Italian and English fabrics many of us are accustomed to? Or is it all in the mind, a case of cloth snobbery?
I find it doesn’t have as nice a hand as VBC and Guabello fabrics. I think it must use shorter fibers too because I find it attract dog hair and other lint more so than other brands I have. That said, it’s fine for a workhorse fabric.

I am a 10.5 on the brannock and 10D in all dress shoes and boots. However, I am on the smaller side of D width. 'These chukkas have a decent taper at the toe box so in my opinion, I wouldn't risk it since you have a wider foot

anyone buy from the website recently? Curious to know if they've been impacted by the Canadian postal strike.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
