Spier & Mackay Contemporary Fit in Navy 40R Fit Check

Hi everyone, I recently picked up this gorgeous navy suit from Spier & Mackay:

I'm on the fence about whether to just get this size 40 jacket altered, or to return it for a 38. My main concern is the shoulder width and whether my tailor would be able to deal with all the excess fabric around the upper back area.

I'm not wearing the suit pants in the pictures due to the unfinished hem.

I really want to get a great fit out of the suit but I need it to be comfortable as well.

Looking forward to your guidance.

Cheers

Can you post pictures without the binder clips?

That does look too large. You could try sizing down to 38. Is this their Contemporary or Slim fit?

duh--was in the title of your thread. I am not sure going down to 40R slim will be enough. You may still need to go to 38R contemporary. What size do you wear in other suits?

Well to be honest, I've never really been able to nail my suit size down.

Right now I have a 40R suit from Giovanni Bresciani (not great quality) which fits ok but is a bit too wide through the shoulders.

I have another suit I had to buy as a groomsman in a 38R which looks good but is a bit tight overall and uncomfortable through the arms. I might be somewhere in between, like a 39.

judging from the photos of the 40R S&M suit I think you'd have enough room to go down to 38R in the arms. Just wondering about the shoulders and jacket length.

My 38 fits my shoulders best and is maybe a bit short. The 40 is a bit too wide on the shoulders but the length is about spot on.

going from 40R to 38R in S&M is only 0.4" shorter in the body; I think length will be still acceptable.

Definitely size down. It is not worth it to alter a "cheap" suit that much. It's going to cost you way more in the end. You look like a strong V shape body. You might even want to try the slim fit.

Thanks for your reply. I’ve gone ahead and requested the exchange for a 38R contemporary fit. I’m hoping the size down is enough without going to slim fit, a bit worried about it being too tight. Can ways get my tailor to deal with any minor adjustments.

Sizing can take some time. Spier and Mackay slim fit can be a regular fit from a different company. Nothing is standardized. You might find a good fit very quick or it may take a bit longer. That's the funny part with online shopping.

Many thanks for your great advice, the 38R fits much much better:
