I think they can very much be fashion statements. 80s prep is all about the Topsiders and a polo.

That is the quintessential 80s prep. The revival of that look is still pretty edge.

If that works for you, go for it. But if you're 30 or over, some people might not understand that you're reviving a vintage look and assume that you haven't changed your style since the 80s. Fortunately, I'm 20 and (I think) can pull it off well. Though I do get a few comments from my peers that I'm wearing their dad's outfit from 20 years ago.

I like the whole prep idea... I always though prep was what Abercrombie was... I have really gotten into Ralph Lauren and buying a bunch of polos... I love the seersucker look but i dont know if i can pull it off

Im trying to get The Official Preppy Handbook but it seems like only place that i can find it is on Ebay

I am going to school at Baylor at Waco...

Oh and im 18 so around your age

Sweet, at 34 I'm edge. And in 30 years years I'll be post-edge...but getting ready for the next edge.

No, no, post-edge is no good. Just like post-punk is no good. The trick is to be pre-edge. Edge out the edgers.

There are many styles of prep. Abercrombie prep is 90s-00s prep (aka fratty). Did you know that A&F used to target gay men? Tell the frat boys that. They'll love that fact.

Ah, but's a fine line between post-edge and pre-edge. You just have to wait :)

im a huge fan of sperry topsiders (i own about 8 pairs).

    a few do's and donts.

    1. DONT wear socks with sperry's.. they are designed to be worn barefoot.
    2. Sperry's will mold to the shape of your feet after being exposed to water (ie. boatshoes are meant to get wet). so consider wearing them to the beach and getting a little salt water on them.
    3. After a few months the shoes will develop a nice patina (spelling?), and have a nice buttery soft broken in leather feeling.
    4. stick to their AUTHENTIC ORIGINALS.
    5. Gold-Bond foot powder is your friend ;D

With all respect, let me venture a contrary opinion. Topsiders, by my jaundiced eye, are some of the most rank-ugly shoes I've ever seen. That I once had the deficit of judgment to actually wear them (albeit a quarter century ago), is a source of great embarrassment.

If you want to go the route of the boat shoe, I much prefer and recommend the canvas model.

I totally agree. I know a lot of guys on this site like Sperry's, but I think they are horrible.
